Jewelry Care
While our jewelry is meant to be worn every day, here are a few tips and suggestions you can use to keep your jewelry looking its best and serve you longer.
Do not believe the Ads that claim to sell water-resistant and tarnish resistant jewelry. Jewelry doesn't tarnish immediately as you pour the water on, it takes time, wear, light, water and some sweat aka salt. Pure chemistry =)
All metals and golds tarnish and scratch over time. With no exceptions. Some can be cleaned and polished, and some need a fresh layer of gold plating.
Jewelry tarnishes, oxidizes, corrodes when it gets in touch with water and moisture like lotions, par fums, make up, soups and when it gets exposed to the sun.
That's why it's Important to take care of your jewelry. If you want your jewelry to last and last longer, take your jewelry off when cleaning, washing, taking showers and especially when using lotions and creams. But if you still do, then make sure to wipe any moisture off your jewelry.
So what to do?
1- Keep your jewelry dry and clean. Wipe off any moisture.
2- Store your jewelry. Before jewelry is stored, make sure it's it clean and dry.
3- How to store your jewelry? When you take it off, ideally keep it in a darker place or store it in a separate little pouch or ideally in the jewelry box, so your jewelry don't scratch and don't get exposed to the sun, so it can last longer.
General Care and Cleaning
To minimize prolonged exposure to moisture and chemicals that can cause tarnishing and wear, we recommend removing your jewelry before showering, swimming, exercising, or cleaning. When not being worn, it’s best to store your jewelry in an airtight container, like a jewelry box (a ziplock bag will do too), which helps absorb excess moisture.
To clean your jewelry, gently wash it with warm water and a mild dish detergent. Use a very soft toothbrush to get into recessed areas. Make sure to completely dry your jewelry afterwards with a soft cloth to ensure no moisture remains, to prevent your jewelry from tarnishing.
These simple tips will help extend the life of your jewelry, but if you feel your pieces need a little extra help to get back to looking their best, we have some suggestions:
Sterling Silver
It is normal for sterling silver to tarnish over time, especially with exposure to moisture or chemicals. Washing your hands while wearing silver rings is perfectly fine, just make sure to dry them afterwards to ensure no moisture remains that can cause tarnishing. To remove mild tarnish, the method outlined in our general cleaning section should suffice, but for more stubborn tarnish, there is an easy at-home cleaning solution you can make. More information here.
You may find that your silver will develop scratches over time and lose some of its original shine. This happens naturally as a result of silver being softer than many of the surfaces it can come in contact with throughout the day. We love the character this can bring to a piece over time, but if you’d like it to maintain its original high polish, any reputable jeweler should be able to re-polish the piece for you to restore its shine.
Plated Jewelry
Rhodium and 14k gold are very resistant to tarnishing—though in some cases, exposure to moisture and chemicals may still cause them to tarnish. Following the general cleaning method and properly storing pieces in airtight containers is typically sufficient to get them back to looking good as new. We strongly suggest protecting your plated jewelry from interacting with any harsh chemicals such as those found in perfumes, hand sanitizer, soaps, and cleaning products to prolong the lifespan of the plating.
The plated layer on our jewelry is very thick by industry standards. However, you may still find that the plating can wear off on the more exposed areas of your jewelry over time. We find that this happens most often with the ring surfaces that come in contact with other hard surfaces.
Pearls
Pearls respond well to frequent wear, as the natural oils on our skin can help them maintain their luster. However, it is important to protect your pearls from exposure to any harsh chemicals such as those found in perfumes, hand sanitizer, soaps, and cleaning products as these can wear away at the pearl’s surface and create a dull appearance. Pearls can be carefully washed using a very gentle unscented soap and dried with a soft cloth.
Gemstones
The gemstones we use have varying degrees of hardness and porosity, so it’s always advised to err on the side of caution and treat them as you would pearls. The best way to clean your gemstone jewelry is in a bowl of warm water with a few drops of ordinary dish detergent. Using an old soft toothbrush (kids toothbrush works great), a mixture of foamy dish soap and water all around the gem(especially under the stone) leave is for a good 2 to 5 minutes to remove all buildup. Then scrub gently behind the stone where dust and soap can collect. Finally, Just rinse and pat dry with a soft cloth.
Diamond Jewelry
Baking soda is great for cleaning diamond jewelry. Mix a cup of hot water with 1-2 teaspoons of baking soda. Place the jewelry in the mix for a few minutes. Rinse, and pat dry with a clean cloth. Also, you can make a solution with warm water (almost hot) and dishwashing soap. Soak your jewelry for about 20 to 40 minutes, gently brush the stone with a very soft toothbrush, and then rinse under warm running water and dry with a clean cloth.
